Deep Learning and Cognitive Platforms

  • Hub101 31416 Agoura Road Westlake Village, CA (map)

We have a two-fold agenda for our December Meetup. First, we will have our usual talk. Second, we will have a farewell party for Bill Vorhies. Read further to know more.

Overview of Our Talk

Our guest speaker, Steven Nasypany from IBM, will provide an overview of Deep Learning, neural networks and why cognitive solutions are not the stuff of science fiction, but are exploitable now by advances in systems, GPUs and software. The most common question from traditional technologists is how Deep Learning can be applied to their industry or market. Steve will review a variety of real-world applications in Banking, Finance, Insurance, Retail, Public Safety, Medical, Utility, Transportation, Manufacturing and Agriculture. He will then have short demonstrations of several cognitive platforms that can be used not just by experienced Data Scientists but skilled users trying to solve common problems in their domain. These platforms will include Tensorflow, IBM PowerAI, AI Vision and H2O's Driverless AI.

About our Speaker

Steve Nasypany started with IBM AIX Development in 1996 and is currently a member of the Washington Systems Center, supporting POWER performance and cognitive efforts. He is a regular presenter at IBM events on Linux, AIX and Cognitive topics. Prior to IBM, Steve worked on NASA's Mission Control Center Upgrade project.

Farewell Party for Bill Vorhies

Bill Vorhies, our beloved Founder of the meetup, has decided to step down from his role as a Co-Organizer of our meetup due to personal reasons. Bill has over the years built our meetup to a 1000 member group and his leadership in the Data Science field has been of tremendous help to our community. To thank him for all that he has done, we will be having a farewell party with free food and drinks. Please stop-by to thank him for all his work and to wish him good for his future.
